Software for graphics, music, and other creations
« on: September 13, 2013, 08:04:54 PM »
Provided here is list of software for graphics, music, etc. that can be used. Feel free to add items to this list. Be sure to list the price, if any (though free or low-cost software is preferred). If the software has a free trial, be sure to explain the terms of that free trial.

* Vectorian Giotto: A Flash alternative designed for designers, not coders, though ActionScript 2 is fully supported. But since Flash is going the way of the dodo for web design, consider using HTML5 for your web animation needs and only using this software for serious animation.

Image Editing

* GIMP: Free, open source software for your image manipulation needs. Might not be as advanced as Adobe Photoshop, but it can still do lots of stuff. Available for Windows, Mac, a number of Linux distros, and more. This is about as close as you can get to Photoshop without spending a cent.

* Paint.NET: A slightly more modest image editor than GIMP, but its functions can easily be extended through the use of plugins. Free to use and available for Windows.

Image Optimizing

* GIF Optimizer: Reduces GIF size by up to 90%. Gives a number of options, including the ability to further reduce size by lowering the number of colors. The software is free to use and available for Windows (despite what the image might indicate, there isn't a Mac version).

* JPEGmini: Can reduce size of JPEGs by up to 5 times. May lower the quality a little, but it gets the job done. It also makes the JPEG a progressive image, which loads as a blurry image first, then gradually loads the detail. This works great for those with slow connections. It's free to download, but free users will be restricted to 20 uses per day. The full version is $19.99. Available for Windows and Mac.

* OptiPNG: OptiPNG is an advanced PNG optimizer. It can also take some other file formats and convert them to optimized PNG. It is free of charge, open source, and available for Windows. Paint.NET users can get an optimized PNG plugin with OptiPNG's functionality.

Some websites like Yahoo's Smushit also offer image optimizing services.

Music/Sound Editors

* DefleMask: Free software for creating chiptune music for other chips. While it supports standard NES channels, it also can make chiptune music like that of the Sega Genesis, Game Boy, Commodore 64, and others. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

* FamiTracker: Free, open source software for creating accurate NES/Famicom chiptune music. It also has support for Famicom expansion chips like the Konami VRC6. Available for Windows.

I have heard of Graphics Gale too---it's specialized towards spriting. I don't use it since Photoshop suits all my needs, but you may find an use for it.

Thanks CC, err.... I mean oh great and evil despot, this is good to know.

There are alots of programs not mentioned here though, like Maya for animators or Image-Line FL Studio for audio.

Then again this is all GM related, so programs like that don't really count.
